Product Description

Staghorn Sumac - Rhus typhina

If you are looking for a plant or shrub that can tolerate heat and attracts birds, look no further, the Staghorn Sumac will even delight your pets. It can be used to frame a garden as it is sometimes referred to as a windbreaker. You must remember that the mature Staghorn Sumac can grow as tall as 15-30’, and 20-30’ wide when fully mature. Just remember to allow room for growth when planting and it will never disappoint you. The foliage is dramatic, but this shrub will drop its leaves in the winter, then displaying beautiful bare “antler” shaped branches until winter has ended and spring brings forth new foliage for the coming year. When in bloom, the blossoms are spectacular and attract viewers' attention.

For those creating a garden of any kind the Staghorn Sumac is one of the most enjoyable and often changing plants found anywhere in the world. The name of the plant comes from the small hairs that grow on the new leaves and resemble the antlers of the stag in the Spring. Whether planted as part of an architectural garden or as a yard to attract wildlife the Staghorn Sumac is a popular option.

The long leaves of the tree resemble a fern and begin the year as a deep green color, before changing in the Fall to deep purple, yellow and orange colors. Many leaves of the Staghorn Sumac will take on a number of colors in the Fall, often half the leaf will remain green,n ad the other portion of the leaf will change to other colors.

Staghorn Sumac is a very large deciduous shrub plant

Its native habitat range from along streams to swamp margins. It is tolerant a variety of soils but does best in medium moisture, well-drained soils. It can be used for erosion control when needed. It is a suckering shrub and will eventually spread and colonise your yard if not monitored appropriately. The conical shaped flowers and fruits of the Staghorn Sumac are some of the most interesting found in any garden. Covered in fine red hairs the plant attracts a large number of birds and flying insects throughout the Summer and Fall.
