Sandbar Willow - Salix Interior

Sandbar Willow Tree is a medium sized shrub that possesses a vibrant, brown-tan bark color. Its crown height and width measure an average of 5'10," and it can reach a total of 100' high and wide at maturity. The Sandbar Willow's hardy planting zone is USDA Zones 2-8, so it displays impressive durability to cold, harsh temperatures. It is not drought tolerant but has the capability of surviving severe flooding. This North Dakota native is found most densely along the banks of rivers and lakes throughout the state and has a dominant presence in Iowa. In general, the Sandbar Willow can thrive in soils with a moderately high ph, but its ideal ph falls between 5.5 and 8.0. Ph is essential, but it is also critical that this shrub has adequately moist soil to grow its best. It multiplies, averaging between 3-5 feet per year throughout 20 years before reaching full maturity. While it is not recommended for home landscape use, the Sandbar Willow is ideal for a wildlife setting. This shrub provides a dense, rounded out hideaway for game birds and different species of wildlife. It would be an excellent addition to a wildlife sanctuary or similar environment where the intention would be to add richness and attract a wider variety of species to the area. If a wildlife type of design in landscaping is desired, this shrub would be an ideal addition but may require a bit more upkeep than other landscape plants. Deer and other hoofed passersby may choose to snack on its vibrant green leaves, which are alternate, thin, long, and simple. The Sandbar Willow may also be used in conservation to balance wet environments due to its common formation of suckers, which help to prevent damage to the soil using water cutting.
