Pokeweed is a Wild-growing Herbaceous Perennial

Pokeweed – Phytolacca Americana. American pokeweed, typically called pokeweed, is an herbaceous, perennial plant that reaches eight feet tall. Pokeweed grows native in the eastern, Midwest, and Gulf Coast regions of the United States.

The flowers grow in clusters all over the shrub. Flowering begins in May and continues into the fall. Each plant has dozens of flower clusters. Once the flowers drop off, green berries take their place, eventually ripening to dark purple. The purple-red stems hold clusters of purple berries that look similar to grapes. The berries are toxic, so be careful planting pokeweed near children. Pokeweed grows throughout most of the United States except for the extreme north. The plant prefers areas with damp soils and abundant shade. Try planting pokeweed along a fence or as a border plant. It needs adequate, frequent watering, but pokeweed tolerates short drought as well. Transplant the pokeweed roots in the late winter. Pokeweed requires little care. Water a few times a week after the taproot establishes in the ground.
