Pin Oak Seedlings have a pyramid shape. It is also known as “Water Oak,” “Spanish Oak,” and “Swamp Oak.” It multiplies and can gain over 24” in height in a single year. They reach heights of 60’-70’. Pin Oak Seedlings leaves are a dark green color and look glossy. Pin Oak Seedlings measure 3”-6” long and have and have five lobes. In the fall, the leaves will turn stunning shades of bronze and bright red. You will notice yellow-green catkins starting to appear that are about 5”-7” long in May. This tree also produces 1/2” long acorns rounded in shape. The bark on a young Pin Oak is smooth and red-gray. However, as the tree ages, the bark becomes a darker gray with deep fissures.

Pin Oak Seedlings are Most Suitable for Small Yards, Attracting Songbirds, White-Tailed Deer, Wild Turkeys, Squirrels, and Ducks

However, it cannot tolerate alkaline soils. It needs full sun with at least 6 hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight. These trees are used for their shade since they can block out the sunlight; They are not suitable for small yards; They attract many different songbirds, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, squirrels, and ducks. Pin Oak Tree Seedlings will grow to be massive trees that will be great for shade. These trees are known to be one of the most common trees in the United States. They are considered to be fast-growing trees and will grow at a rate of 3 or more feet per year in the right conditions. These trees are elementary to develop due to their ability to adapt to most soil types. They do need moisture and good drainage around the root system. Once established, these trees are very drought resistant and tolerant of disease and pests.

The fast-growing deciduous shade tree is perfect for an ample open space where shade is desired; pin oaks are named for the small, thin dead branches which stick out from the tree’s trunk. The organic shape of the leaf canopy starts in a pyramid shape but then tends to become more oval as the tree matures. The tree develops a straight, thick trunk that grows up to the crown, giving it an asymmetrical shape that is desirable for open horizons. Pin oaks are a few trees that will tolerate extreme soil conditions on both ends of the weather spectrum. The tree will thrive when planted in wet soils most of the time, and this shade tree will thrive under drought conditions — frequently planted in city-scapes and parking lots because of its adaptability and tolerance to pollution, compacted soil, poor drainage, and drought. This hardy species has few pests or disease problems, making it a long-living shade tree.

Pin Oak Seedlings require little care.

An application of balanced fertilizer in the early spring during the first few years of life will help promote slightly faster growth and deeper roots, but this will occur even without the addition of fertilizer. Pruning the lower branches while the tree is young may be needed, depending on the growing location. The smaller branches tend to droop while not at all harmful to the tree, making walking or mowing under it difficult. The removal of lower limbs early in the tree’s life will keep the tree aesthetically pleasing and provide plenty of headroom under its massive canopy. Pin oaks produce thin glossy leaves that turn brilliant shades of russet and bronze in the fall. The tiny leaves decompose quickly, so they make great additions to the compost pile or can be used as-is for garden mulch. Pin oak trees are botanically known as Quercus palustris and are often referred to as small-leafed red oaks.
