Best Moss For Sunny Areas

Although many homeowners would rather have a moss garden, many continue to misinterpret that the sun is not suitable for moss and that it thrives better in the shade. This may lead you to become puzzled about what type of conditions they grow best in.

What is the Perfect Amount of Sunlight For Moss

The perfect amount of sunlight will be determined by the species type you plan to have grown. An example of this is when a moss thrives better in the shade and with the small sun.

These types of moss only need a minimum of 2 hours of sunlight. Other than these, some thrive in direct sunlight and can stand at least 8 hours of sunlight. Below, we have three other types of moss which also thrive in sunlight.

 1. Hair Cap Moss

The Hair cap moss belongs to the Polytrichum genus, which has more than 100 individual species. It is usually found growing in areas where the soil is acidic, in peat bogs and fields. North America alone is home to at least 10 of the species. The species seen often is the P. commune and can reach as high as 6 inches. It can also establish wide or clusters beds, which are normally seen in a peat bog. The hair cap moss color can vary between green to a reddish tinge brown color. It can almost get 0.5 inches in length and printed tips and bases that are sheathed.

The organs for reproduction are female and male and make a single plant. The male organ forms a structure similar to a flower and extends from the top. It is produced yearly, and the length of the shoot is due to its ability to provide many flowers over a long period. The ¨grain¨ capsule is a light-brownish color with a covering of hairs on the surface. The shape of the capsule is box-like and contains a membrane covering that is visible once the lid has fallen. The growth of hair cap moss occurs typically beneath the rhizoids. Commercially, it is used in the creation of baskets, brooms, and bed stuffing.

 2. Tree Apron Moss

The tree apron moss is an evergreen perennial moss and has a growth habit known as pleurocarpous, and it forms 1¨cushions or mats. It has green to yellowish stems, and the branches are plentiful. Older stems will be stretched out either on a tree or ground. The juvenile steam will be ascending or sprawling across the ground or trunk of a tree. Their height can be as much as 3 cm in length.

 3. Reindeer Moss

The reindeer moss is the simple name for the Cladonia species. It is considered to be a lichen that many reindeer love to eat. It also goes by the name of cup lichen, a greenish-gray, feathery plant similar to a group of tiny trees that can easily grow 4¨ easily.
