Container gardens are great space savers; they can be used on decks, balconies, patios, terraces, and even window sills. What is Container Gardening?

Container gardening is the art of growing plants in containers, window boxes, and pots etc. They can be used for creating focal points, to separate spaces, hung from the ceiling, to create privacy, and to accent landscaping.

Selecting a Container

Any container that holds soil and has drainage holes, can serve as a great container for terrestrial plants. If your container does not already have drain holes, simply drill four holes in the bottom of the container for drainage. When choosing a container, things to consider include: convenience, appeal, cost, and size. The size of your container should provide adequate space for soil and roots, in order to ensure flourishing plant growth. Larger plants may require a stronger material to prevent being blown over and the roots from breaking the container.

Selecting Garden Plants

Your choice of plants should convey a particular feeling, mood, or theme. For example, elegant, sophisticated, classy, quiet, environmentally friendly, perennials, creative, exotic, tropical, vegetable, herbs, woodsy, etc.

Selecting a Good Potting Soil

A good potting soil is one that has a good air to water balance. Garden soil is too dense for container gardening.

Planting Your Own Container Garden

1. Add 2" of aggregate or stones to the bottom of the container.

2. Fill with potting soil; some experts suggest wetting the soil first. Do not fill the soil to the top of the container to leave room for watering.

3. Plant your garden plants. For mixed plant containers, plant densely.

4. Pack the soil firmly, then water to settle.

Caring For Your Container Garden

  • Water plants thoroughly. How often you water your plants depends on the weather, size, and pot.
  • Feed regularly. Experts suggests fertilizing with seaweed extract, diluted fish emulsions, or compost tea. Begin feeding every two weeks then adjust based on plants response.
  • To keep your garden looking attractive, spread garden with mulch to spruce up and help retain moisture; keep mulch at least one inch away from plant roots. Remove dead flowers, tattered leaves, and prune often.
