Bluets make great groundcovers
The bluet, or Houstonia Caerulea, Azure Bluet or Quaker Ladies, is a beautiful perennial plant that grows from Northern America to Canada. However, these have been seen as far west as Oklahoma and Wisconsin. The Bluet is a lovely plant that produces small, blue flowers with a yellow center. They are small and are usually an inch or smaller in diameter. Each flower grows on one stem. It is usually found in shady areas and among grasses. Each small, perfect little flower has four petals and most commonly, yellow center. There are several varieties though and can be blue, lavender, white or rose color. The bluet is a delicate little plant and most often grows to only about an inch in height. Most of these plants grow one flower to a stem, however, some varieties are known to produce several blossoms on a single stem. There are roughly about 20 different species of this plant found in North America. The seed of this plant looks much like a capsule, which can be heart shaped. Another common name for this little plant is Quaker Ladies. It is said that it gets this name because the shape of the mounds of flowers is similar to the shape of the hats that Quaker women wore. They are a great addition to any garden or landscape area. They will form a great ground cover that will compliment taller flowers in the garden.
They normally bloom during the spring, and however some varieties of this plant will bloom in the summer and into the early fall. It is a perfect ground cover for problem areas in your landscape or garden. Gardeners and landscapers use this plant around rocks in the garden for a spectacular statement or around stepping stones. It can also be used along pathways or even in the border to edge your garden. To replant or separate these plants, simply dig up the clump in the fall, pull it apart and replant it in other areas that you choose. They also attract wildlife such as bird and of course, butterflies. It will grow well in shady areas or partly sunny areas, but does not do well in full sun. Bluets do prefer moist soil, with good drainage. Including this plant in your garden or landscape will definite compliment any area, it grows.
