Wild Grape Vines

Posted by Tammy Sons on

Nothing is a super-sweet as the wild grape vine plants. Wild Grape Vine – Vitis in latin

The wild grape vines are known to be "true vine" plants. Meaning, they have no solid trunk base. Instead, they have several forking tendrils which aid in them climbing. It is this versatility that makes them such an appealing decorating choice for gardeners and landscapers.

As wild grape vines are known to thrive in a number of locations (riverbanks, roadsides, forests, urban lots, etc.), adding them to any garden or landscape is an easy task to do. They do require maintenance, however, but the upkeep is simple.

These vining plants grow vigorously. They can reach the height of trees, averaging out at about 15-17 meters or so. Often, they can even envelop the items they grow on, so proper management is key. There are a number of ways to prune wild grape vines. Old vines should be pruned prior before growth begins in the spring. For these plants to thrive, keep them in warm soil that isn't soggy and drains well. Full sunlight is detriment to their health, so keep them out of the shade.

Several variant species exists among them, so the consumer has a number of options to choose from. For example, tiny white flowers bloom from wild grape vines in the early summer. Those then fade to hard, green grapes mid-summer before ripening to deeper hues of reds, purples, etc. late summer. The broad leaves are a lush tone of green. They alternate and are heart-shaped at the base.

When adding to a landscape, consider a support base so that they won't simply just trail along the ground. Place them in flower pots alongside the house to make an enticing arrangement. They even work well when set up alongside fences. Or, go for the classic and attach them with an arbor, a popular choice that adds an intricate beauty to any passageway.
