Downy Lobelia is a Wildflower Perennial

Downy Lobelia - Lobelia puberula. The Downy Lobelia is a wildflower that is native to the eastern and south-central areas of the United States and is a member of the Bellflower family. This plant is a herbaceous perennial and can be found growing in most parts of the forest and fields as well as along the edge of streams. The flowers on the plant can be purple or blue with white toward the center. The upper lip of the flower has two lobes, and the bottom rim has three lobes.

Downy Lobelia is a Beautiful Addition to Any Garden and Adds Light Floral Smelling Blooms

The leaves can grow to be 5 inches in length and 1.5 inches in width. Each of the sheets has small, irregularly placed teeth and are a mint green color. The plant grows to be one to three feet in height and blooms toward the end of summer or early fall. However, this plant is eye-catching all year round. The Downy Lobelia grows best in moderately moist areas (mesic or hygric habitat) with full to partial sunlight. The plant produces fruit that is rather small and has plenty of seeds. The Downy Lobelia is a very showy and attractive plant. It can quickly adapt to a range of different climates and soil. Primarily the plant is pollinated by bees and is likely to attract butterflies. It can plant any time after the last frost. The plant may die into the ground during the winter months, and returns in early spring adorned with basil leaves. It is a beautiful addition to any garden and adds a light floral smell wherever it takes to bloom. The Downy Lobelia is pretty low maintenance and needs moist soil, sunlight, and space to grow.

Beautiful and striking purple flowers will appear on the plant beginning in July and will last all the way through October. They grow up and down the long stem of the plant, dispersing the color and texture of this plant.
