Tree of Heaven – Ailanthus altissima. The Tree of Heaven is of the Simaroubaceae family, and it is a perennial tree that grows to 55 feet at mature height. This tree produces yellow fruit with coarse green leaves. It is a rapid-growing tree that adapts well to textured soils and is reasonably durable with its medium drought tolerance. It is native to China, and Europe and its leaves are still often used in traditional Chinese medicine as an antiseptic. The tree responds well to pruning and has a vibrant regrowth after being cut back. Heart-shaped, large leaves make this tree an attractive shade tree.

This is an exotic plant originating from Northeastern and Central China and Taiwan. The Ailanthus flower has the females and males on different plants. Each tree can produce up to a large 325,000 seeds a year! As its name suggests, this tree looks like something out of a fantasy book, and while it may not be the focal point of your garden or the kind of plant you would decorate tables with, this tree is easy to maintain and has an average lifespan of 50 years. It would require minimal pruning, but you would want to cut it back occasionally to prevent it from taking over, as well as to keep it small. The Tree of Heaven an be invasive in some areas. The Tree of Heaven is incredibly drought, pest, and sun tolerant, and produces prolific pale blossoms in late spring. This tree would be great as an edging plant and would be a beautiful addition to any landscaping project.
