The Red Maple has regularly been seen as having distinct green to dark-green leaves during summer or warm months that are 2" to 6" in length with a soft texture on each leaf.  The leaves are sectioned into 3 or 5 with clefts that appear jagged in irregular patterns.  When looking at the bark of the Red Maple, it seems gray with refined small clefts into each strand that is scale-like in both appearance and texture.

The Red Maple gets its name from the autumn months, changing the color of its leaves from green to bright red, like a fine red wine.  In the spring you will see tiny red flowers appear from buds as well as any new stems, appearing red as well.
