Red Cedar Tree: Juniperus virginiana
Red Cedar Tree is native to the Eastern United States and vast plains.
It can grow in a wide variety of soils including acidic, alkaline, loamy, moist, sandy, silty loam, well-drained and clay soils. It is an evergreen, and its scale-like leaves grow compact into rounded or 4-sided branches. Overall, the tree will take on a columnar or pyramidal shape as it develops. The red cedar tree grows at a medium rate of about one or two feet per year and gets to be quite tall. It is a hardy tree, with deep roots that give it excellent drought tolerance and the ability to withstand occasional flooding. Its love of sunlight and understanding of many types of soil make it a favorite tree along roads, windbreaks, and hedges. Its distinctive scent has made cedar a popular choice in building chests, fences, and elegant furniture and a live tree will bring the same aroma into the yard. The rounded fruit of the red cedar tree is gray or bluish green, about a quarter-inch in diameter, and looks like a berry but is a type of cone made of fused cone scales. The cedar waxwing bird eats the cones, and many browsing animals will eat the twigs and foliage. The compacted branches make an excellent home for other birds including favorites such as the mockingbird, robin, sparrow, and warbler.
