Follow instructions

I gave this to my daughter as a Christmas gift as she really wanted a plant and I thought this would be simple. The design is very cute and she was very happy with it. She has followed the care instructions that were provided including regular misting and the weekly soak, but the plant is in terrible shape. It is brown and crispy and needs to be replaced. I am hesitant to do so as we have no idea what should be done differently.
