Mountain Mint

Mountain Mint- Pycnanthemum. Mountain Mint is native to North America and prefers a sunny patch to grow in, where it will grow up to 5 feet tall with slender rhizomes usually found in clusters. The leaves are 1 to 2 inches long and are a light green color until the plant matures and the leaves begin to turn white. In late summer and the beginning of fall, mountain mint produces small white and lavender flowers that are produced in tight clusters at the top of the plant. The mint grows in many areas, including roadsides and meadows, and the leaves and flowers are edible.

The Mountain Mint is appreciated for its fragrance and beauty.

The pleasant smell is described as a spicy mint and oregano. The plant develops either pink or white pigments in its leaves, which frame the beautiful clusters of flowers. The mountain mint can usually be found in woodland areas, in which they receive at least a half-day of the sun to thrive and survive. These plants have even been known to attract butterflies, but keep away pests, like gnats. The mountain mint contains pugelone, which is what keeps the gnats away. This also deters deer and rabbits, so one does not have to worry about these animals eating the plant in their garden. Mountain Mints with noticeable hairs on their stems and thin leaves can also be used in teas since they contain very little pugelone.

Mountain Mint is the perfect plant to add to your garden. Mountain Mint is a lovely perennial that will accent any landscape.

The blooms on this plant will appear in midsummer and last through early fall. The blossoms are a pretty pink and the foliage is a medium to dark green. They attract bees and gorgeous butterflies to the area. They are drought tolerant and resistant to pests and disease. These are commonly called Hoary Mountainmint. They are easy to grow and require little maintenance. They prefer dry to moist soil conditions and good drainage.
