The majestic, fragrant, beautiful magnolia tree is part of a large genus of flowering plant species that has about 210 members. Named after Pierre Magnol, a French botanist, magnolias are divided into two primary groups. One group is found primarily in East and Southeast Asia. The other type flourishes in eastern North America, the Caribbean, Central and South America. The star magnolia and the saucer magnolia flower in early spring. The sweetbay magnolia, Southern magnolia, and others blossom in late spring and early summer.

Ideally, magnolia trees should be planted in acidic soil that remains moist and cool but never floods. It has a shallow root system, and care must be taken, so it isn't trampled, compacted or broken. Well-drained sand-based soil with acid-forming organic matter and a 4 to 5-inch layer of mulch is an excellent choice for planting magnolias. Moist, acidic clay soil or loamy soils can also work well.

People love magnolias because of their dramatic foliage and fabulous flowers. Plus they require very little care and are pest and disease resistant. Magnolia can flourish in harsh Southern summers, are beautiful year-round, and their seeds and foliage attract migrating birds. Available in a full variety species and varieties.

You can plant magnolia in full sun or partial shade. If planted in full sun, use moist, peaty soil to keep the roots damp. If planting magnolias in cooler climes make sure, the plant is protected from southern exposure. Winter sun can damage the leaves and cause flowers to open prematurely. Mature magnolias can handle moderate drought, but the young plant requires regular watering. Give the magnolia lots of room to reach its mature width and height.
