Description

Lurid Sedge- Carex Lurida

Narrow, bright yellow-green leaves grow in tufts on the Lurid Sedge - a wetland sedge. The channel-like leaves are each about a foot long. The clump forms like a fountain, with 3' long triangular culms forming above the foliage in late spring. Brown seed spikes form from the culms. Lurid Sedge loves the sun and wet soil like marshes, swamps and wet meadows. Clump them together along ditches for soil retention and beauty. The spikes bloom during June, producing mature spikelets that are an appealing brown color.

Lurid Sedge plants are also low-maintenance and deer-resistant.

Lurid Sedge otherwise known as Carex Lurida is a pleasing clumping grass that grows naturally in riverbanks and streams. Being a perennial, it is a long-lasting grass that grows in any kind of conditions including wet, moist and dry soil; this makes the Lurid Sedge great for soil stabilization around ponds, rivers, lakes and stream banks. The Lurid Sedge attracts and supplies food and cover for songbirds, ruffed goose chicks, amphibians, moose, ducks as well as other wildlife. It has beautiful arching leaves that grow thick seed heads that resemble sweet gum balls that merge with the tall bright green and yellow foliage.

Lurid Sedge likes wet conditions.

They grow in the prairie and woodlands. It is a perennial and has brown seed capsules high up on the stem. It is unknown if it has any edible, medicinal or herbal uses. These are found around riverbanks, lakes or streams growing naturally just like they were meant to be. These plants love water and will grow the best with its roots in the water. They can be grown and planted in large clumps or clusters. The bloom looks similar to a baby bottle brush and can be found green or brown. They can bloom from May all the way to September. They are native to the southwest. Lurid Sedge will work well around ponds and water gardens. This sedge will grow well in moist and dry soil conditions. Lurid Sedge will also help with soil erosion around ponds and lakes. It is resistant to grazing deer. It does also like light textured soils.
