Longstalk Sedge is a perennial which means it will grow year after year without replanting. It will grow in the lower 48 states. It grows best with little or no direct sun. Best performance will be in dry to moist soil. It usually grows in areas that are open with no disturbance around it. It is commonly called grass and mowed over because it closely looks the same.
Longstalk Sedge has a leaf that has no width it is just skinny and thin. It can be found in red, purple or brown. The foliage is hairless and contains no hairs. The leaf when felt can be rough and feel like sandpaper. They have small flowers that are white or yellow. Ants love this plant and often make homes around the bases.

Longstalk Sedge is excellent to outline flower gardens and water gardens. Longstalk Sedge grows excellent in moist and slightly dry soil areas. As this plant starts to die out the ends of the leaves will turn brown or black. They can die out in the winter and come back in the spring. Or you can cut them again as they die out.
