Dwarf Crested Iris- Mature Age Plants
Dwarf Crested Iris - Iris cristata
The Dwarf Crested Iris is a beautiful perennial that is native to the eastern portion of the United States. These beautiful flowers make quite a lovely spot in the landscape or garden especially when several are planted together. They grow upward from rhizomes that will at a time put forth several shoots at once. These plants tend to form into colonies and will make an excellent ground cover in areas of shade where color is needed. Since these are perennials, they will go into a dormant state in the autumn and winter months but will bloom the next spring all over again. The bloom on these plants is a pale to dark purple or violet color with a yellow crest. The beautiful bright green foliage is a sword-shaped leaf. They are quite lovely when several are blooming at once. These plants, when grown in the wild, are typically found in a woodland setting. Although they prefer moist, well-drained soil conditions, they will acclimate themselves to other soil types if necessary. Once these are established, they will be able to withstand a short period of drought conditions. These plants are very easy to grow and will require very little maintenance to keep them healthy. The botanical name for these plants is Iris Cristata.
