Blue Wisteria-Wisteria Sinensis
China Blue Wisteria or the Blue Chinese Wisteria is a fast-growing tree that can reach heights of 6 to 10 feet in height with a spread of 8-10 feet with an average sized trunk. It’s a flowering plant from the Fabaceae family of legumes. It usually blooms the first year it is planted. Its blooms are the reason it is such a prized ornamental tree for landscaping. It will grow anywhere in the country and its drought tolerant, disease resistant, and it flourishes in full sun, light shade or full shade. When flowering in May, it produces dangling racemes of blue, bluish-purple or purple that can measure up to 18 inches long. It looks like a flowering version of a weeping willow tree.
In the fall the flowers of the Blue Wisteria-Wisteria Sinensis transform into 6-inch long seed pods with a velvety texture, and the foliage turns yellow
Pruning twice yearly produces the best-looking blooms within the tree's crown. Transplanting is the best way to cultivate this tree. It thrives in any well-drained soil and when it is exposed to a minimum of six hours of sunlight, direct or indirect. For the first year, the tree should get a minimum of one inch of water per week. They require very little added fertilizer. The China Blue Wisteria grows best in zones 5 through 9. These trees have a fast to moderate growth rate. They tend to be slow to break dormancy after planting. It may take until early summer before the leaves break out the first year. It’s a great addition to a planter bed or a large pot in an outdoor living area on the deck, terrace or patio. This picturesque tree is graceful year round displaying colorful blooms in the spring and early summer and soft color in the fall. The ease of caring for this tree almost makes it self-sufficient.
