Tooth Wood Fern
Tooth Wood Fern - Dryopteris Carthusians. A deciduous, butterfly-friendly shield fern that is native to the northern hemisphere in both Europe and North America. The robust fronds are commonly used in the floral industry for their dark green, lacy fronds. It grows well in cluster plantings in moist, wet, sandy, rocky, alkaline or acidic environments, though it prefers a more neutral condition. It forms a natural ground cover that is resistant to rabbits and deer. It grows at a medium rate to a height of 2 to 2.5 feet with a spread of about 1 to 1.5 feet. This fern is a very easy fern to add to your garden, because of its willingness to be so adaptable. It grows native all over the northern hemisphere. But it can also be known as Spinulose Shield Fern. The plant produces tall bright green fronds.
Tooth Wood Fern is the fern that is often used by a florist to add greenery to their arrangements.
An excellent fern for massing or used in a woodland garden. And it adapts quickly to moist or even wet soil. Also be sure to trim old fronds back to the ground in late winter since it is deciduous.
The best way to get the prettiest toothed wood fern is to plant in clay soil, with a neutral pH level that has an average moisture level. It also is great for a ton of landscaping purposes, it's excellent as accent plants, and it even attracts butterflies. Great for borders, ground cover.
Tooth Wood Fern also is gorgeous in planters on your porch or deck.
It is great because it is deer and rabbit resistant so you won’t have to worry about spraying them to keep them away. And blooms in April right after the last frost. It also grows well massed and waterside, but also great to see growing in woodland areas, among other wildflowers in thickets and stream banks.
